To be frank, macro photography is not my cup of tea.
But weather lately has been unfavourable with gloomy and white sky ever since the tsunami catastrophe. I am not sure if it is interrelated but that's from my own observation.
Without a dedicated macro lens I was playing around with only a close-up lens which is screwed-in on my normal zoom lens so as to obtain virtually macro shot although not at 1:1 magnification.
I managed to get two decently sharp images which I consider.....err I leave it to you to judge.
Pic #1 is partially dried banana leaf placed on the window pane to be backlit.
Pic #2 is some drops of water on a yam leaf.

I have always wanted to record and document Kuala Lumpur. Its grand architecture, its old buildings especially, its fast-paced lifestyle and the myriad of activities taking place in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
For a start, as I found myself more free than usual one Saturday morning, I headed to KL and stopped at Merdeka Square. Merdeka Square (formerly known as Selangor Club Field) has witnessed the most historic event in its lifetime when it was there The Malaya's first prime minister the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj declared independance of Malaya from The Bristish rule at 12.00 midnight on the eve of 31 August 1957.
I was impressed by how sturdy the tudor-style architecture of The Royal Selangor Club House is and how intricate and meticulous the moorish-styled Sultan Abdul Samad Building is. I was told that the British government at that time has opened a new brick factory just to supply the bricks to the construction of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Must be a mega project back then!
I sat there and made my mental note of how I was going to shoot around this place and how to shoot effectively.
Here are some pictures that I consider suitable to display in public. I was pretty disappointed with the overcast weather and unflattering white sky. Nevertheless I perservere and make the best of the available light albeit pretty flat and unflattering.
Do enjoy the pictures folks!
The films used is Fujichrome Provia 100F

My portfolio online
|
|
I have made a new portfolio at zainfotofolio.fotopic.net.
Fotopic in my oponion is better in presenting selective photos for permanent showcase as we can customize what we want the presentation to look like. I chose only photos that I consider good (good in my eyes lah) and suitable for display in portfolio presentation.
However I will still keep this fotopage updated as usual as this is more like a personal photoblog. You might or might not encounter the same pictures.
Till then happy snapping!

Kuala Besut - revisited
|
|
Whenever I went back to my hometown I would make it a point to go and shoot Kuala Besut. It is because I can always get different pictures as there is always different lighting, different weather, different position and types of boats and different season.
You dont believe me? Go and try shoot for yourself.

KL Landmarks
|
|
|
The two KL landmarks which have been photographed to death are Petronas Twin Tower and KL Tower. I attempted to avoid shooting them from the normal angle and I have come up with these shots although I wish the lighting was more favourable and more flattering.

Jay Jay the venerable singer
|
|
A few days before fasting month I attended my wifes companys annual dinner. As usual a corporate dinner wouldnt be complete without a singing performance by a local artist. This time the local singer engaged was the venerable singer Jay Jay. Jay Jay has been singing as far as I can remember since I was a schoolgoing kid. And to my surprise he still looked the same as he did 20 years ago. Whats your secret Jay Jay?
Anyway that night he sang many nostalgic songs that evoked memory of my childhood and my school days. Those good old days were refreshed back in my mind and it suddenly made me realize that it has been about 16 years since I left school days (stop calculating my age!)
How song can sometimes play wonderful magic on us. I enjoyed his performance that night very much. By the way I also managed to take some pictures of Jay Jay as I happened to take my camera along at that night.
Enjoy!

Kelana Jaya Lake Garden
|
|
I always take my son to Kelana Jaya Lake Garden either in the early morning or late evening. And whenever I happen to bring my camera along I cant resist snapping some pictures. I hope this lake garden will always be preserved by the power-that-be in spite of the active and rapid development going on in the vicinity......
Taking pictures in the early morning is always fun as the lighting is never boring and dull. This kind of lighting is called the 'magic hour' or 'the golden hour' in photographic terms...or some people may call it 'National Geographic lighting' simply because photos in NatGeo were almost always shot within this hour either in the early morning or late evening....

A courting couple
|
|
I normally do not have courage to shoot people candid. I am not sure what would be the response I would get from people that I shoot. But in this case maybe the guy was too immersed in the conversation with his girlfriend (or maybe his girlfriend-to-be) while watching the river flowing under the bridge in the late evening didnt care about me taking his picture even though he knew my presence there with my camera.
I shot this in the late evening somewhere at the Sg Klang river bank near The Jamek Mosque.

While replenishing the nicotine supply into my body outside my office I noticed there was new construction site behind my office building. The place used to have one big pond which I suspect resulted from the abandoned mining. The pond served as a small wetland sanctuary which became a habitat for a couple of animal species such as monitor lizard, ducks, various species of fish, otter etc. I usually enjoyed watching them from my office window but they are all gone. The said pond has been reclaimed to make way for development which I believe is condominium project. How sad.....
